    In the picturesque village of Mesogi, near Pafos, lives Chrystalla Iacovou, a remarkable woman who embodies the enduring spirit of traditional Cypriot basket weaving. While the world around her evolves rapidly, Chrystalla’s hands preserve tradition and culture, crafting each basket with skill, patience, and heartfelt dedication.
    For years, Chrystalla worked tirelessly as a cleaner at the local police station. Yet, her true artistry came alive after her workday ended. Returning home, she immersed herself in the delicate, yet demanding, craft of basket weaving. Even today, her creations reflect not only skill and precision but also a deep love for her culture.

    Sharing Cyprus's timeless traditions
    Her husband, Andreas, shares in this dedication. Together, they venture to the riverbanks every Christmas season to gather reeds - the raw material for their baskets. This process is no simple task. The reeds must be soaked, softened, and sorted — the strongest rods become the foundation, while the rest are expertly woven into the basket’s body. The work is physically demanding, requiring strength, patience, and craftsmanship passed down through generations.
    Yet, this beautiful tradition is now at risk. In a world dominated by convenience and mass production, fewer young people learn the intricate art of basket weaving. The heritage of Cyprus — so rich in stories, techniques, and cultural identity — faces the threat of fading into obscurity.
